The Terror After the Rain

Shane liked to play Dungeons and Dragons, whether as the board game, computer or playing at these outings. He would liked to have had more of the games in the various locations. Lots of fun, good friends and food.
Shane fancied himself a conquering hero, killing off the bad guys and saving those in distress from overwhelming odds and superior opponents. Today started out to be one of his favorite outings this far but toward late morning things had taken a horrific turn.

The first body Shane found was lying face down on on a boulder in the middle of the stream that flowed through the peaceful, wooded valley. He was laying in a position that told Shane that he was put there either after he died or placed there to die. His face was in the water water so he likely would have drowned but when Shane tried to check him for a pulse, he found that his throat had been slit. That explained the reason for being dragged up on that rock - and all that blood in the water.
Farther down Shane found another body. He did not know him by name (David... something) but he was from the "Great Tree" group. One of the guys that he admired for being a really tough competitor, always playing a fair but strong game. Not easily defeated and a good player plus, he was hot, in Shane's eyes.
Now he was lying on a fallen tree, partly in the water with two arrows in his chest. His pants had been opened by somebody and left that way. Drying blood caked on the corner of his silent lips that made the pain of the attack still show on his face. One of the arrows looked like it had narrowly missed his heart but the other had been fired in at close range, silencing any cries for help or mercy that he may have tried to utter.
Shane stepped out of the forest on the shore of the small lake mere feet away from another body laying on the muddy shore. This time he knew him very well.
John was his friend of many years and now he lay in the bloodstained water with a knife still stabbed into his gut. His clothes were still wet in the hot sun so he had not been there long. Stifling his urge to scream in anguish, he hurried on toward the old shack.
*Thwack*
"What was that?"
Shane stopped in his tracks at the sound.
*Thwack* The sound came from up ahead. Carefully making his way toward it he stopped, terror building inside him as he saw the denim clad figure ahead He was aiming a compound bow at something but Shane couldn't see what. Moving slowly he got to where he could see the archer's target.
There, tied to a tree and gagged was Steven Barnes, one of the dungeon masters of the games.
Two arrows were embedded in the tree beside him and the archer was about to release another.
*Thwack*
This one landed dangerously close to Steven's crotch. Steven flinched and shook his head "no" as the shooter readied another arrow.
"What's the matter, Stevie...? Afraid I might not miss?"
He released another.
"Aaaaggfffff!" Steve growled through the gag as the arrow nailed his arm to the tree.
"Oops!" The bowman quipped at the shot. "Bet that hurts."
Again he fired. This one struck Steve in the leg, bringing another groan from the gagged victim.
Shane wanted to stop it but knew that he would be cut down before he could get anywhere close. Watching with growing horror, he saw the bowman strike again and again... navel, abdomen, stomach, each time taunting his victim.
Finally it was over as one last arrow pierced Steve's heart and he fell limp, head down, dangling from his bonds, blood still trailing down from each arrow wound. Staring in disbelief Shane watched as the killer cut the rope and Steve fell to the ground.
Throwing some branches over the body, the killer tossed the compound bow down with the branches and picked up another quiver of arrows and a longbow and started down toward the swampy mud just down the hill.
Shane made his way to the old shed. Inside he quickly found the pile of bodies stashed in the dark bathroom. Marty, Rick, Nicholas and Tom, along with two others he did not know lay in a heap. Next to the bodies lay Tom's long sword.
Shane picked it up and tested the edge. Sure enough it was sharpened to a fine edge. Against all the rules but Tom was a bit of a rogue, a do it his own way type of guy. He knew it was dangerous but he kept it safe and out of sight. Combat with metal weapons was strictly forbidden in the club. Plastic weapons were used for melee, foam tipped arrows and flimsy toy bows. This thing was deadly. - Just what Shane was looking for.
Now Shane was on the hunt. He didn't know how to do it, even if he could but he had to stop that killer and get out of these woods to get help.
Moving quickly but carefully, Shane walked back toward the place where he had watched the killer as he slowly killed Steve. The arrow riddled body was still there. It wasn't a bad dream, his still form lay crumpled under the branches that had been thrown on top of him. He picked up the discarded compound bow. Surprised by how light the deadly weapon was, he dropped it because there were no arrows to use unless he pulled the ones out of Steve's still form.
Continuing down the hill, he slowly searched the forest for movement. The heavy morning rain had turned the dry, dusty road into a thick, soupy muck that stuck to everything. The trail was gone now and the old farming road was the shortest distance back to the place he had parked. Frightening imaginations races through his mind and in front of his eyes as he began to see a killer behind every bush and tree trunk.
"Nooo!" "Help! Somebody Help-Unh" The shout was just up ahead. Cut short, Shane knew another player had just been cut down. Stepping up the pace he soon saw what he had been expecting.
A few yards ahead was a figure laying in the mud. he wasn't moving and there was an arrow in his back. Waiting in silence, Shane heard the snapping of twigs and crunching of earth beneath heavy boots moving away. Daring to step out of his hiding place he cautiously approached the body in the mud.
This time it was Chuck, another member of his group. He still clutched his plastic battle axe as he lay in the bloody mud. Shane saw that he was lying on another arrow, now mostly hidden in the mud under him. The one in his back was, no doubt, to finish him off. Shane pictured the handsome, well endowed figure as he had looked just this morning. Now he lay dead here in the gooey mass of thick mud.
Suddenly the snapping crunch of twigs and stone under booted feet alerted him of the impending danger. Trying to scramble off the muddy path, Shane stumbled into the muck. Looking over his shoulder he saw Sam drawing down on him with the long bow. A fresh wave of terror washed over him as he struggled to gain his footing.
"Unghhh!"
The arrow felt like someone had hit him in the back with a baseball bat. The arrow head emerged from his chest and blood spurted from the wound. The pain was unbearable as he tried to go on. He fully expected to feel another arrow strike at any moment so he struggled against the pain to get away. It was a futile attempt. Shane's head reeled. Darkness moved in as he dropped into the bloodstained trail and lay still.

An excellent ending to an excellent series. Kyle, you are the master!
