Elden - Knifed on the street.

"A jogger found him like this just a few minutes ago. He must have been here an hour or so. I think he's part of this mob war that's going on."
Henry finished his call in then called me to let me know that another one of Tony's men was dead.

I had just started to doze off when my phone jarred me fully awake.
"Kyle?" Frank said with a hoarse whisper into his phone, "It's me, Henry."
"Yeah, Henry, what's goin' on?"
"It's Elden. He's been knifed out here in the park. It looks like he was on his way home when they got him."
"How?" I asked, "Whoever killed Elden must have been good. Elden was smart, he would have been hard to take by surprise."

"Maybe so," Henry said, "But he was killed with this fancy knife, whoever did it stabbed him with a downward thrust to the chest - right through the heart. They must have been standing almost eye to eye when it happened, and there is no obvious sign of a struggle."
"Fancy knife?" I asked.
"Yeah, curved handle, brown wood, gold metal."
"Doug." I said. "That's one of his knives."
"I'll take care of it, Henry, thanks."
I hung up. Dylan was standing in the doorway listening. "What's going on now?" he asked.
"I've got to go. You and Kip stay here. Stay inside and stay out of sight."
"I want to come with you." he protested. "You might need help out there."
"Not yet! I have something to take care of first." I said, I'll come back for you later. I need to see someone first. Stay here."
I gathered my stuff up and headed out the door.
"Keep this locked." I warned as I closed the door in his face. It looked like he puckered up his lips to me just as the door closed. I smiled to myself and left.

Nailed

Sneaking into the house was easy. No one was home except Gabe and he didn't seem too surprised to see me.
"Where's Doug?" I demanded.
"How the hell should I know?" he muttered.
"He's your boyfriend, you keep better track of him than that." I said as I picked up one of the many swords on the room.
"Put that down. That one's not mine." he demanded. Doug doesn't like people messin' with his things."
"Does that include you?" I asked, walking over to the bed where he was still laying.
He smiled up at me, taking that as an offer for sex. "That depends," said, "What you got in mind?"
"Get up." I answered. "I want your ass out of that bed." I waved the heavy broadsword over his chest. "You're taking me to Doug right now."
"F*** you, Asshole!" he snarled, "Get the hell out of here." He jumped up out of the bed and grabbed a katana that was laying on the dresser and waved it wildly. "Put that sword down and get the f*** out."
"Wrong answer!" I snarled.
Whipping the sword around I clashed it against his katana at the same time sweeping my foot around to the back of his knees. He fell to his back on the floor. Straddling his hips and placing the point of the broadsword over his heart, I demanded "One last time, asshole, Where's Doug?"
"He's with Jerry and Mel at Vinnie's place guarding Vinnie's kid brother."
"Sal's still in town?" I asked. "Interesting."
"Doug will think it's interesting when I tell him what you did here tonight." "He will kill you for sure."
"In that case, I might as well take care of you right now." I said, lifting the sword from his chest.
Holding the katana in front of himself I saw him start to tense up again. He was going to strike.
I drove the sword down through his body just below the ribcage, I heard the wood floor splitting as the sword literally nailed him to the floor.
"Gaaahhhh!" He screamed. "Oh shit!" "Help!" "Somebody help!"
"Keep screaming." I said. "You'll probably die quicker if you struggle." I started for the door.
"Don't leave me like this." he pleaded. "No! Please!"
"Don't worry, you will see Doug real soon now." I said as I left the room.
"You'll both be in Hell before the night's over."
I could hear him screaming as I got in the car. They were too far from any neighbors for anyone to hear him. It wouldn't matter if anyone did. He will be dead in a few minutes anyway.

I started to drive back to my place to pick up Dylan and head on over to Vinnie's place to see what damage we could do there when my phone rang. It was Henry, one of our men on the police.
"More bad news," he said in a low voice. "You ain't going to like this."
"What now?" I asked, fearing the worst.

"It's Kip." he said. My heart stopped. "He's been gunned down on the street."
I almost hit an oncoming car head-on. Kip was my friend. He was staying with me and Dylan at my place. Fresh out of college he had just started working for Tony as an accountant. "He's no soldier!" I screamed into the phone. "He's a friggin' bean counter!"
"Sorry man, He was packin' a gun and it looks like he tried to defend himself."
"Shit!"
"He was eating a fish burger from Mickey D's"
"They put two bullets in his chest."
"Damn!"
"Where's Dylan?" I asked.
"I have no idea, I figured he was at your place."
"That was where Kip was supposed to be, locked inside my place - safe."
"I'll fix this. Stay as far away as you can." I said. "I'm going to take care of some things tonight."

"Be careful, Kyle." He warned. "There are a lot of hot tempers flaring tonight. Be careful..."

"I'll give you an anonymous tip." I said. "912 Logan Road. Upstairs front bedroom."

"That's Doug Rawlings' place... Did you kill him?"

"Not exactly. - Just give me an hour before going there, OK?"

"I'll give you all the time you need. - Dammit, Be careful!"

Dylan
After my third call to Dylan that ended up going to voicemail again, I almost knew what I was likely to find when I got home. I told Kip and Dylan to stay together and keep out of trouble - So much for that. Kip runs out to get a meal and gets killed on the street, now no answer either on my home number or Dylan's cell. . .

The front door was open. I pulled my gun and stepped inside. No visible signs here.
"Dylan?" I called out hopefully. No answer.
I could hear the TV in the den so I headed that way.

The room was a mess. The lamps were tipped over, the aquarium had been smashed and the carpet was soaked, things scattered everywhere. I turned the TV off and listened. - Nothing -
I headed for my room. There I found Dylan. Sitting on my bed, leaning against the wall. I felt for a pulse. None.

He had been beat up pretty bad. He had a bloody headwound, bruises on his forehead and jaw and two stabwounds. The first was in his stomach and the second, with the knife still in his chest through his heart.

I held back my rage. I was going to need it later. I grabbed the knife handle and pulled. At first it resisted and I pulled Dylan up from against the wall. Placing my hand on his chest to brace him, I pulled again and it finally released. I was sickened by the warmth I could still feel from his lifeless form. I just wanted to hold him tight to me and mourn for a while but I had work to do.

I wanted to give this knife back to it's owner as soon as I could.

Harlan
Checking the security system, I found what I was looking for. I quickly called Henry, our friend in the police, and asked him to run a plate number for me. He hesitated at first, until I told him about Dylan.
"33 Grove St. Harlan Meyers. - Know him?" he asked.
"Yeah, 'fraid so." I said. "I'm going to get him first, then I'm going after Doug at Vinnie's old place."
"Shit, Kyle," Henry protested, "I can't do anything to keep you out of trouble if you get caught in this!"
"Don't worry about me," I said, "I can take care of myself."
"Get Frank to go with you." he pleaded. "They'll tear you up!"
"Frank's guarding Tony." I answered. "He can't."
"But-"
"Gotta go." I said as I hung up.

I arrived at Grove St., Parked in a driveway where the grass was a little long. They must be out of town or something, I hope.
Walking up the street to number 33, I arrived as somebody was walking into the house after taking something out of the back of his car. Hiding behind a pillar, I watched as he came back out with a bag slung over his shoulder. I spotted something that I was hoping for - an empty sheath hanging from his side. He turned as I stepped out from behind the pillar.
"Oh shit!" he said as he spotted me. "What do you want?"
"I think you lost something and I just wanted to return it." I said as I raised up his knife, with Dylan's blood still on it.
"That's not mine." He protested.
"Really? I'll bet it fits just fine in that empty sheath that you're wearing there, Harlan."
He started to bolt but I grabbed the bag that he had around his neck and yanked him backwards. He fell to the stone driveway and I didn't give him a chance to do anything.
Covering his mouth with my left hand I drove the knife into his gut until it hit the stones under him. "That's for Kip." I said as I twisted the blade and yanked it out. Driving the blade back at least as hard as before, I said "This one's for Dylan." I slowly turned the knife as his breath hissed through my fingers and his muffled scream started to weaken.
This one's for me!" I said yanking the blade out and slamming it back into his body with enough force to break the blade on the stones beneath.
Standing up I watched him panting and quivering, wishing that I could inflict more pain before he died. I stomped on his chest once for good measure which obviously caused a lot of pain but he was already losing consciousness as blood started filling the cracks in the driveway with his miserable life blood.

I stood watching the blood spread out and fill the cracks. I still wished I could bring him back to kill him several more times. The little weasel died too easy.

I crossed the street and walked back to my car. No one seemed to notice so I drove on toward Vinnie's place.
